Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae is the biggest star of alté, the new underground variety of Afrobeats. Her debut album, The Angel You Don't Know (2020), an innovative record on which she blends Afrobeats, R&B, and hyperpop into a unique yet futuristic sound, marked Amaarae's immediate breakthrough. A remix of one of the tracks, "Sad Girlz Luv Money," went viral on TikTok in 2021 and has since racked up half a billion streams on Spotify.
