Before American Football gained worldwide fame as one of the most important representatives of the Midwest emo subgenre, it was a modest indie rock band from Illinois, led by Mike Kinsella. They were at the time influenced by artists such as Steve Reich, Tortoise and The Sea and Cake. With graduation and growing up on the horizon, the band's farewell gift would be shared in the form of a self-titled album, which was released in September 1999 via the locally founded Polyvinyl Record Co. What would unfold in the following fifteen years, however, is something that belongs to rock 'n' roll legend. Word-of-mouth, message boards, mixtapes and burned CDs made a then-unknown band with an unremarkable house on the album cover bigger than expected. In 2014 American Football responded to the call of a growing legion of devoted fans and the band reunited. With the spring of 2026 approaching, new growth is also on the way.
