Ami Taf Ra has roots in Morocco and grew up in Cairo, Istanbul, and Amsterdam. She now lives in Los Angeles. All these cultures merge in her music. Ami has performed on renowned stages worldwide, from the Southeast Jazz Festival to performances with the Metropole Orchestra at the Concertgebouw.
She uses music as a tool, so to speak, to explore layers of history, spirituality, and collective memory. "In her music, she goes beyond the experimental and works within a living tradition. In doing so, she further develops free jazz as a spiritual technology," is how Pitchfork describes this unique approach.
On her debut album The Prophet and The Madman, produced by Kamasi Washington and released on Brainfeeder, she fuses Moroccan Gnawa traditions with jazz and gospel into a transcendent whole that is best enjoyed live.
