Bass hero, composer, and bandleader Christian McBride moves effortlessly between straight-ahead jazz, soul, funk, and hip-hop. The American has won eleven Grammy Awards and played on over four hundred recordings, with names ranging from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea to Sting and James Brown.
With Ursa Major, founded in 2022, McBride surrounds himself with four young musicians: saxophonist Nicole Glover, guitarist Ely Perlman, pianist Mike King, and drummer Savannah Harris. The quintet manages to switch between swinging traditions and adventurous improvisations, with McBride continuously steering the whole thing with his familiar, driving, and always tasty bass lines.
