R&B, Neo soul

On Thursday, February 12th, Super-Sonic Jazz will pay a special tribute to one of the most influential artists of our time: D'Angelo . The evening takes place one day after his birthday and honors his immense artistic legacy. For this occasion, we're inviting a selection of the best musicians in our scene to recreate the work of the Black Messiah . From intimate grooves to that elusive, spiritual funk so characteristic of D'Angelo's sound.

D'Angelo (Michael Eugene Archer) is considered one of the founders of the neo-soul movement. With his groundbreaking albums "Brown Sugar," "Voodoo," and "Black Messiah," he pushed the boundaries of R&B, soul, and funk. His music exudes emotion, sensuality, vulnerability, and spiritual power, and has influenced generations of artists worldwide. D'Angelo passed away on October 14, 2025. However, his musical legacy and influence on modern R&B and neo-soul remain undeniable.

Paradiso & D'Angelo
D'Angelo has performed at Paradiso no fewer than five times. On March 2nd and 3rd, 2015, D'Angelo took to the Paradiso stage for the last time with his The Second Coming Tour: two evenings that fused soul and funk into something timeless. D'Angelo's shows at Paradiso were iconic, and anyone who was there knows how he could transport the audience into a magical flow rarely experienced. His music and presence brought an energy and depth that seemed to transform the venue itself. Together with his band The Vanguard, he performed not only his beloved classics but also new work and surprising reinterpretations. As bandleader, guitarist, and keyboardist, he stood at the heart of a collective of top musicians: Pino Palladino, Jesse Johnson, Isaiah Sharkey, Cleo “Pookie” Sample, and John Blackwell. No sequencers, no auto-tune: just pure, breathing music. It was more than a performance; It was an experience that stayed with the artists and audience for a long time. The mutual love between D'Angelo and Paradiso is therefore something we will continue to cherish, but especially want to celebrate during this tribute.
