From the first line of Jana Horn's untitled third album, 'nothing prepares you for this, or is a cure', the tone is set for a record that is both candid and direct. Like the desert landscape where it was recorded: Sonic Ranch in West Texas, the austere production and the use of silence, sharp guitar and dissonant flute have a vitality reminiscent of early Cat Power and Moon Pix. This ten-track album, which was essentially recorded as a trio with Adam Jones and Jade Guterman, lets Horn's spoken, raw singing contrast in a fine way with Guterman's melodic, catchy bass and Jones' jazz- and punk-inspired drumming. The flute and clarinet of Adelyn Strei diverge and merge, like an apparition, while pianist Miles Hewitt lays the foundation, sometimes with a single repeated note, like a hammer on a nail. This new version of Horn shows the artist in perhaps her most concentrated and resourceful manner, conveying feeling with a subtle touch. Line-up: Zonzij - Jana Horn. Tolhuistuin (formerly Paradiso Noord) is located at IJpromenade 2 in Amsterdam North. A free ferry departs from Amsterdam Central Station to Buiksloterweg. Turn left and you’ll walk into Tolhuistuin. For club nights, the rear entrance is used (Buiksloterweg 5C), which can be reached via the Overhoeksplein. Tolhuistuin also has a restaurant in which you can have a bite before the show.
