Vibraphone player Joel Ross grew up musically in the Chicago church and carries those roots with him in his playing. On his fifth Blue Note album, Gospel Music, he translates Bible stories into sound: meditative, layered, and imbued with hope. With his sextet, Good Vibes (featuring Josh Johnson and Maria Grand on saxophone, Jeremy Corren on piano, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums), he effortlessly alternates between complex pieces and melodic wit. Ross has won the DownBeat Critics Poll multiple times and has been praised by both NPR and The New York Times for his expressive power. A musician who showcases the vibraphone in a virtuosic yet accessible way.
