You can safely call JOHAN's 'Pergola' a Dutch classic. The album was released 25 years ago, and for that reason, JOHAN toured the Netherlands over the past few weeks. Now they are going to play 'Pergola' in its entirety one last time, at the Haarlem Vinyl Festival on Sunday, October 4 at Patronaat.
'Pergola' features gems like 'Tumble and Fall', 'Day is Done', and 'Here', which catapulted the band to a significant force in Dutch pop music.
For frontman Jacob de Greeuw, the album was also important: "Pergola is a very dear album to me that came about after a period of severe depression. Band members quit, a record deal in America fell through. I decided to continue together with drummer Wim Kwakman and work hard on the album. Together with a listening ear, friend, and producer Frans Hagenaars. A beautiful, joyful, but sometimes also sad process. I am still very proud of the special end result: an account of falling and getting back up, dealing with disappointment, but also one that contains a lot of hope and love (even more than I suspected at the time). I am feeling good about myself now and am eager to play the album that means so much to JOHAN and me live, 25 years later.”
