On Wednesday, July 1, Schuur will be dedicated to Keti Koti, the annual commemoration and celebration of the abolition of slavery. Keti Koti literally means 'broken chains' and marks a moment of reflection, encounter, and awareness.
More and more people are becoming aware of the atrocities and dehumanization that took place during centuries of slavery, and of the consequences that are still visible in our society today. During Keti Koti, we reflect on this history and make room for connection, culture, and the future.
From 3:00 PM onwards, everyone is welcome at De Schuur for a varied program featuring theater, film, music, workshops, conversations, and encounters. The entire program is free of charge. DJ Abstract from the collective The Astronauts will provide music, among others, and Gershwin will give an unplugged performance. Additionally, there is an in-depth program with lectures, stories, and activities for young and old.
A Surinamese or Antillean party is, of course, not complete without food and drinks. Visitors can enjoy homemade Surinamese and Curaçaoan snacks. A shaved ice stand will be present from 4:30 PM. In addition to the regular assortment of the Schuur bar, Surinamese ginger beer and Curaçaoan awa de limunchi are also available.
History and literature enthusiasts can also indulge themselves at the Keti Koti Haarlem book table. Various books are available here regarding the history of slavery, colonialism, and their impact on the present. Many of the titles have a special link to Haarlem, through the subject matter or the author.
