Atmospheric dream pop inspired by the Irish west coast
By the time Irish musician Maria Somerville began writing Luster, her label debut for 4AD, she had long since left her native Connemara. She grew up on the rugged, mountainous west coast of Galway and later developed an atmospheric dream pop style in Dublin, inspired by the landscape of her youth. In 2019, this resulted in All My People, a self-released LP full of reverb, nostalgia, and homesickness.
After returning to Connemara, the songs for Luster were created, an album that further deepens and refines her sound. While All My People sounded primarily melancholic and retrospective, these twelve tracks reveal an artist who has become more confident in her direction. The music sounds spacious and focused, with a keen eye for atmosphere and detail.
