Before Sam Gendel rose to become the successful, idiosyncratic saxophonist he is today and Sam Wilkes became a sought-after bass guitarist, they formed a duo that performed in restaurants in Los Angeles. Their wondrous improvisations sound like a mix of hip-hop productions and worn, but precisely because of that, delightful funk and jazz records. Together, they previously played with KNOWER, the band of drum virtuoso Louis Cole. As a duo, they broke through with the live album Music for Saxophone & Bass Guitar (2018). Afterward, they went their separate ways: Gendel collaborated with Ry Cooder and Vampire Weekend, among others, while Wilkes worked with Chaka Khan, Rufus Wainwright, and Jacob Collier. With their new collection of recordings, The Doober, they return as a duo and join forces on stage as well. Saxophone and bass guitar; they need nothing more. Or as Pitchfork puts it: 'A duo with innate chemistry.'
