Jonathon Linaberry looks back on 'Radio Waves', his sixth album as The Bones Of JR Jones, but there is more at play than just nostalgia. The collection, recorded with producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), is atmospheric and hypnotic, drawing inspiration from the soundscape of Linaberry's youth while simultaneously exploring the doubt and uncertainty of adult life. The arrangements are enchanting, built on the tension between acoustic instruments and retro synthesizers, and Linaberry's performances are raw and intense, sometimes painfully vulnerable. Taken together, this yields a poignant exploration of memory and longing, delivered by a tireless seeker; a revealing work of personal reflection, rooted in the endless beauty, pain, and chaos of growing up.
Linaberry, born in central New York, began his career in punk bands before becoming fascinated by Alan Lomax's field recordings. He launched The Bones of JR Jones in 2012 and began releasing a series of albums and EPs that led to his songs being featured in films and TV series such as True Detective, Suits, and Daredevil. This resulted in numerous tours throughout the US and Europe, with performances at festivals such as Telluride Blues and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. Along the way, Linaberry also shared the stage with artists such as The Wallflowers, G. Love, and The Devil Makes Three, and received praise from Billboard, American Songwriter, and Under the Radar, among others.
