The Piper's Grip is a reading with a live soundtrack by Eimear Walshe, originally commissioned by Mirror Lamp Press – a tender and reverent account of the homoeroticism during an Irish music session. In the tradition of Irish musical obscenity, this story describes a man's ecstatic rediscovery of his culture, and thereby of himself. Eimear Walshe's performance is presented as part of the exhibition project state of us , curated in collaboration with EVA International.
about state of us
state of us is a project consisting of an exhibition at de Appel and a series of film screenings, performances, and discussions about the inherited traumas resulting from colonial violence and government action, which continue to leave their mark on society and on people's mental and physical well-being for generations.
Starting from Ireland—generally regarded as the first British colonial project—the exhibition and events bring together artists engaging with Ireland or the Irish experience, alongside the ongoing and historic struggle in places like Palestine and Bangladesh. The works show how the everyday, insidious practices of colonial administration and violence persist long after the formal independence of states and international agreements, anchored in bodies and memories, in intimate affections, in social dynamics and dysfunctions.
in collaboration with de Appel
de Appel is an institution founded in 1975. It soon became internationally known as an alternative institutional model, born from the need of artists to present performance and video art. Today, de Appel continues to serve as a host for artistic and curatorial experiments. Through a program of embedded art in schools and society, a thirty-year-old Curatorial Programme, and an active archive, de Appel brings people together to practice a mutual exchange of knowledge through exhibitions and live activations.
