In our long running podcast series Curious Ears, composers and artists of various backgrounds have been giving an introduction into their musical world. In this special live edition, Gaudeamus Award jury members Peni Candra Rini, Jessie Cox and Hardi Kurda discuss the ideas of composer and musicologist Ton de Leeuw, whose work is showcased twice during this year’s festival to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday. De Leeuw was one of the first composers and musicians in The Netherlands of the second half of the 20th century who showed interest in non-western music.
The jury members of this years’ Gaudeamus Award each embarked on a unique journey of identity, cultural belonging and innovation. In their work, they deal with dilemmas that Ton de Leeuw analyzed and discussed at length: acculturation, structuralism, exoticism. During this Curious Ears Live conversation they will share their insider’s view and provide a contemporary reaction to Ton de Leeuw’s propositions at the end of last century.
