The mildly psychedelic English party band Happy Mondays was the standard-bearer of the Madchester scene around 1990, which also included The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, and Inspiral Carpets. Their breakthrough album Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches (1990) yielded the hits Step On, Kinky Afro, and Loose Fit, songs that still get anyone over fifty onto the dance floor. Keyboardist Paul Ryder passed away in 2022; otherwise, the Happy Mondays play largely in their original lineup, including frontman Shaun Ryder and the legendary maraka player/dancer Bez!
