FIBER’s Symposium – It’s the End of AI

Join the thinkers, researchers, artists, philosophers and authors in imagining our futures beyond the current AI reality. This micro-symposium tries to envision a world beyond the current AI reality, asking artists, researchers, and academics what other directions might exist. Is there a reality in which AI is not exploitative by nature, but ecologically balanced, not built on stolen data? What small, open, community-owned, lower-impact models are worth exploring, if any? And what is already being built, through art, activism, and science, to counter the major players? The narrative persists: AI, in its current dominant form, has become an integral part of the world and is now, we are told, indispensable. This is based on the acceptance that everything will ultimately become AI or AGI – with accompanying doomsday scenarios or radiant utopias – and that this is the only possible outcome. Recent statements from OpenAI refer to the arrival of AGI this year, but there is no concrete evidence to support this claim. At the same time the EU is jumping on the bandwagon so as not to miss out on any opportunities. But just as every narrative creates its own truth, there may be other narratives too: of a future that takes a radically different approach to artificial intelligence, or refuses it altogether, or works with computer technology and other intelligence(s) on entirely different terms. Speakers Sarah Diedro Jordão (Dreaming Beyond AI) Mariana Fernández Mora (Slow AI + Restless Grounds) Pieter Sellies (Fossielvrij + stopdirtydatacentres.eu) Ymer Marinus (Telemagic) Abdo Hassan (Moderator & Opening Words) More TBA The people at FIBER have kindly offered a limited amount of free tickets for Subbacultcha members.
