At the end of November 2023, the 'orphaned angel', 'the voice of mud and roses', 'the greatest songwriter of a generation': Shane MacGowan, passed away.
In the 1980s, he broke through with the notorious band The Pogues, who combined the rhythms of the Sex Pistols with Irish melodies that seemed centuries old. Like no other, he poetically described Irish immigrant life, drug use, and raw love. But he was also known for his excessive and destructive lifestyle.
The song "Fairytale of New York" remains the most popular Christmas song in England and Ireland. The singer counts Nick Cave, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Sinnead O'Connor among his biggest fans. Flip Noorman is also an admirer of MacGowan. And Flip has more than proven his admiration with his unique tributes to Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits.
Noorman encountered The Pogues as a young teenager, and his love for these almost outdated songs has never faded. According to Bruce Springsteen, people will still be singing MacGowan and The Pogues' songs 100 years from now. And you can't argue with The Boss. So let's get started!
