Häxan is the cinematographic representation of filmmaker Benjamin Christensen's extensive research into the development of witchcraft through the ages and the psychological impact on those accused of witchcraft. Through visually stunning vignettes, Christensen moves between documentary and reconstruction, directly addresses his audience through his intertitles, and even involves himself in the moral fabric of the film by appearing as the Devil.
