Labess creates a vibrant and boundless musical universe where Algerian chaâbi meets flamenco, Gypsy rumba, Afro-Latin rhythms, and folk music traditions from around the world. Led by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Nedjim Bouizzoul, the band emerged from a journey of exile: from the streets of Algiers to Quebec, Colombia, and beyond. These experiences are transformed into personal stories of migration, identity, and freedom, and translated into powerful and deeply human music.
Founded in Montreal in 2007, Labess has spent nearly two decades developing a unique musical language rooted in Algerian tradition yet open to sounds from around the world. Their music is sung in Arabic, French, and Spanish and moves between festive energy and emotional depth, supported by rich brass arrangements, infectious rhythms, and the warm, expressive voice of Nedjim. Themes such as exile, belonging, love, and freedom run like a common thread through their work, inspired by the artist's personal journey and the many cultures and musicians he has met along the way.
