At a young age, American pop artist Maddie Zahm could be found in church and taking guitar lessons. That is where she began with worship music and playing instruments. Later, she discovered songwriting through American Idol, inspired by fellow contestant Catie Turner. Soon followed a musical career she would never have dared to dream of as a girl. Her first EP is full of minimalist yet powerful productions with a clear focus on her voice. The songs deal with raw, emotional themes. With the viral success of “Fat Funny Friend,” Maddie introduced topics such as body image, (queer) sexuality, and faith crisis to a young audience. Since “You Might Not Like Her,” she has been teasing new music online and has rediscovered the community she had lost. On Thursday, September 17, she will perform at Bitterzoet.
