On The Roof: Almaghoot Quintet 'Levantine Hues'

HoogtIJ Amsterdam20:0026

AlMaghoot Quintet ‘Levantine Hues‘ is a boundary-crossing ensemble rooted in storytelling and shaped by the richness of diverse cultures. Founded by Syrian clarinettist and composer Ghaeth Almaghoot, the quintet embodies authenticity through its intercultural musical dialogue. Ghaeth is a Syrian-Dutch clarinettist from the small town of Salamiyah in Syria. He only began playing the clarinet at the age of 21. In 2015, he moved to the Netherlands after fleeing the war in Syria. Under the guidance of his teacher Alex Simu, he began a new life as both a student and a musician. Ghaeth graduated from the Conservatorium of Rotterdam. Levantine Hues reflects Ghaeth’s growth as both a person and an artist. Having experienced firsthand how music can change the course of a life, his highly melodic Arabic background inspires his fellow band members to elevate his ideas to new heights – including guitarist Teis Semey (a familiar presence at On The Roof) and violin player Yanna Pelser (Brainteaser Orchestra / Tijn Wiebenga, Ponga, North Sea String Quartet). The quintet’s boundless creative energy will do justice to midsummer, surprising and warming the hearts of the audience On The Roof. Line-up: Ghaeth Almaghoot – clarinet Teis Semey – guitar Yanna Pelser – alt violin Johannes Fend – double bass Jacobus Thiele – drums/percussion
