Sugar Rot
Canada | 2025 | 81 mins | English + English subtitles
After a brutal assault by an ice cream man, punk girl Candy becomes the host of a mutant baby. As her body slowly and inexorably transforms into sweet, irresistible ice cream, her humanity fades in the eyes of the men around her. They no longer see her as a person of flesh and blood, but as an object: something to be consumed, claimed, and devoured. What follows is a grotesque, confrontational, and razor-sharp nightmare in which bodily horror and social critique go hand in hand. This delightfully bizarre, utterly unsubtle, and uncompromising feminist trash film by Becca Kozak was met with loud enthusiasm on January 3rd at the WinterBUT Film Festival in Breda. And rightly so: this is the kind of film you don’t just watch once; you have to share it. That’s why we’re screening Sugar Rot once again at WORM, for everyone who missed it the first time or simply wants to experience it all over again. Expect an overdose of unhinged, gloriously filthy trash packed with gore, absurdism, and tastefully excessive excess. Trash that would proudly earn the seal of approval of John Waters himself: the one and only Pope of Trash. But don’t be fooled: beneath all the muck, melting bodies, and shock value lies a sharp and highly relevant feminist message about power, objectification, and our Western patriarchal society.
Prior to the screening, film scholar Dani van Duin will give an introduction, unpacking the film’s more serious thematic layers. This ensures you get the most out of the experience and that Sugar Rot can truly shine in all its sticky, unsettling glory. This bold, no-holds-barred mix of gore, punk energy, absurdity, and social commentary is simply not to be missed.
