Wolf and Dog by Cláudia Varejão 2022, Portugal, 111 min., Portuguese w/ English subtitles Around Rotterdam Pride we’re screening Wolf and Dog, the feature debut of Portuguese documentary maker Cláudia Varejão. A film with beautiful cinematography by Rui Xavier and an experimental edge, and a strong fit for WORM. Wolf and Dog (Lobo e Cão) is set on São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores. Ana grows up with her mother and grandmother, in a community where faith and tradition decide what is expected of a girl. Her best friend Luís is as happy in a dress as in trousers and looks for his own kind of freedom. When Ana’s friend Cloé arrives from Canada, Ana falls in love for the first time and starts to ask what she really wants from her life. Varejão worked with non-professional actors, cast from the island’s own residents, among them members of the local queer community. The line between fiction and documentary blurs throughout. The film won the main prize of the Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, and has not been shown in the Netherlands before. Cineville valid at the door and online on the day itself!
