My New Band Believe is the new project of Cameron Picton, former bassist and occasional frontman of black midi, and marks a fresh artistic direction following the band's breakup in 2023. Positioned between band member and bandleader, Picton began working on new material without fixed expectations, from which the foundation for this debut gradually emerged. The result is a grand and hallucinatory album that effortlessly shifts between diverse emotional and thematic worlds, while an intriguing, dreamy logic runs like a common thread through the music. Together with an ensemble of renowned musicians, including Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble, and Andrew Cheetham, Picton creates a rich and constantly transforming musical universe.
The first single, “Love Story,” forms one of the album’s standout moments and tells, seemingly simply at first glance, the story of an everyday relationship — from living together to falling apart in the blink of an eye. The song’s apparent lightness is given extra weight by an underlying threat of loss. Picton draws on and sometimes refers directly to classic love songs, and wrote the track in a fleeting moment in early 2024. With this project, he attempts to give new meaning to the modern singer-songwriter album, where it is precisely the small, intimate details that carry weight to make the larger whole believable and palpable.
