PULSE is a Bremen-based string quartet that expands the traditional string quartet lineup by incorporating synthesizers, electronics, and forward-thinking guest artists from diverse instrumental and musical backgrounds, creating sonic worlds in which new musical ideas flow freely across genres and boundaries — wherein sound becomes space and space becomes movement.
Hydra is a project by Nick Dunston, a composer rooted in jazz and improvisation, and PULSE. Using audio feedback, contact microphones, battery-powered amplifiers, Dunston’s voice, and banjos, they explore soundscapes that range from wild, untamed noise to delicate, controlled tones. As a composer working with improvisers, Dunston is particularly interested in how musicians actively listen, respond to one another, and create fleeting, site- and time-specific moments of music together. Hydra is thus both an exploration of sound, feedback, and rebirth, and a celebration of community, individual expression, and the radical love of musicians.
