Black metal
The Norwegian black metal band Mayhem celebrated their long and, to say the least, eventful career last year with the '40 years of Mayhem' tour. Mayhem's debut EP Deathcrush (1987) and the first album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) are still milestones in extreme metal history, but even in later work the band has never lost its black soul.

The Serfs, with roots among the silos of southwestern Ohio, are a dark and industrial band of dancefloor artists. They're a band of deranged troubadours whose sound and musical ideology seem to be a logical extension of their immediate surroundings: hard-wired and hypnotic synthesized melodies propelled by a churning, scraping percussion with metallic tones.

LIVE: THE FIENDS OF DOPE ISLAND
n a chemical-soaked city below sea level, something nasty’s bubbling to the surface. Teenage werewolves can’t hardly stand it. Every heartbeat turns the crowd into a swarm of human flies. From the graveyard of rock ’n’ roll, rising with a snarl and a wiggle, come The Fiends of Dope Island — howling the mutant gospel of The Cramps. A toxic brew of punk and rockabilly, born for the freaks, creeps, and creatures who never fit in.

Bass Drum of Death
Paradiso
Mon 9 Feb
Garage-punk
Bass Drum of Death returns to basics. Their sixth album, "SIX," sounds like an ode to the early years: raw, rattling, and straight out of the garage. Frontman John Barrett wrote and recorded the music with guitarist Jim Barrett and drummer Ian Kirkpatrick in his Nashville home studio, with Jeremy Ferguson (Cage the Elephant, White Reaper) at the controls, the icing on the musical cake. The result is a powerful mix of fuzz, energy, and southern swagger.
