Superfan is the songwriting alter ego of Kali Priya Flanagan, a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and “prodigal son.” Flanagan started making music at the age of four and wrote his first songs at eleven. At fourteen, he signed his first record contract while honing his craft on piano, drums, bass, double bass, and violin. Now, at twenty-one and recently signed to the London label AD93 alongside artists such as Joanne Robertson, YHWH Nailgun, and Dagmar Zuniga, Superfan is preparing for the release of his second album, My Piledriver Heart (MPDH). This album marks the birth of “Acousticello,” the ongoing live collaboration between Flanagan and cellist Omeed Almassi, which has shaped both his recordings and live performances over the past two years. The album is built around elaborate string arrangements with a naturalistic approach and pop magnetism, contains ten tracks, and reflects a shift from the raw directness of his debut Tow Truck Jesus to a more mature, melancholic view of love, identity, and interpersonal distance, largely written in friends' living rooms and shaped by observation, memory, and fragmented lyricism.

‍Rooted in the interplay between Almassi's virtuos virtuoso cello and Flanagan's detuned acoustic guitar—partly shaped by his Indian heritage and referencing Eastern string traditions—the Superfan Acousticello sound functions as a blurred, fused instrument, further refined in the basement studio “Chateau Hardware” alongside co-producer Hudson Pollock. On MPDH, the two translate this intimate setup into expansive, impressionistic arrangements that defy categorization, inspired by Ryuichi Sakamoto, The Sea and Cake, Cat Power, Low, and Sigur Rós, among others, as well as the vocal traditions of Elizabeth Fraser, Beth Gibbons, Rufus Wainwright, and Harriet Wheeler. Now based in Brooklyn following early success under his former alias “KALI” in Los Angeles, Flanagan is part of a new experimental singer-songwriter and cello-driven scene. He collaborates extensively within the New York underground and also expands Acousticello to include the work of other artists, while touring, studying at Hunter College, and further expanding his presence in experimental and indie circles.
