With the trio Sunflower , drummer Joost Lijbaart captures the essence of making music: attention and genuine connection. Together with bassist River Adomeit (USA, 1996) and singer and guitarist Amelie Spinks (UK, 2003), he presents the new album Love Letters tonight, which is rooted in the singer-songwriter tradition. Wolfert Brederode (piano, harmonium, and Wurlitzer) and Tim Langedijk (guitar), who feature on the record, will also be performing at this concert in Club Nine.
In Sunflower, Lijbaart relinquishes much of his virtuosity and opts for simple grooves and a warm, open sound with plenty of room for improvisation. The songs on this new album, through which he reveals the most personal side of his music, deal with care, closeness, and loss. Tracks that are also inspired by Joni Mitchell, Americana, and folk. Over the past 35 years, Lijbaart has built a fine international career as a drummer, bandleader, and sideman. With this Sunflower album, he adds a beautifully soulful chapter to it.
